I like your caution about jumping to conclusions, but I think in this case you're underrating omicron. I think the recent really sharp case spikes in NY, DC, FL, (soon everywhere) are omicron, simple as that. Seasonal Delta was happening before that in the north for sure, but now O is coming in on top of that.
